The 2015 Mitchell Lecture will be delivered by Prof Melchior Wathelet, Advocate General at the Court of Justice of the European Union.

Advocate General Wathelet was born in Belgium and educated at the Universities of Liège and Harvard. He was Professor of European Law at the Catholic University of Louvain and the University of Liège. Elected to the Belgian Parliament in 1977, he served as a minister and Deputy Prime Minister of Belgium until 1995. A judge at the Court of Justice from 1995 until 2003, Prof Wathelet returned to the Court in 2012 as Advocate General.

Background: The Mitchell Lecture is an annual European law lecture hosted by the Edinburgh Europa Institute and named after its founder, Professor JDB Mitchell.
